If you are getting ready for oral surgery, you might feel nervous. That is completely normal. You may need wisdom teeth removed, dental implants placed, or another type of procedure. Knowing what will happen before and after surgery can help you feel more calm and prepared.

At Jay Platt, DDS Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center, patients are cared for from the first visit all the way through healing. Dr. Jay Platt and his team focus on safety, comfort, and clear communication so you understand every step of your treatment.

Here is an easy guide to help you know what to expect.

Before Oral Surgery: Your First Visit

Your journey starts with a consultation. During this visit, Dr. Platt will examine your mouth and review images such as X-rays or 3-D scans. He will explain what treatment you need and answer your questions.

Some common procedures include wisdom teeth removal and dental implants. These treatments require careful planning to make sure your mouth heals correctly.

You will also talk about anesthesia or sedation. These options help you stay comfortable and relaxed during the procedure.

Before surgery, you will receive instructions. These may include:

  • Finding a driver to and from your procedure as you will not be able to drive after general anesthesia
  • Taking medicine if it is prescribed
  • Not eating or drinking for several hours before surgery if sedation is used
  • Planning time to rest at home after your procedure

Following these instructions is very important for a safe and smooth surgery.

The Day of Surgery

Most oral surgery procedures are outpatient. This means you go home the same day.

When you arrive at the office:

  1. The team will review your health history and confirm your treatment plan.
  2. They will monitor your vital signs, such as your heart rate and blood pressure.
  3. You will receive anesthesia or sedation so you stay comfortable.

Many procedures take about 30 to 60 minutes. You may be at the office for about 90 minutes total.

The team uses modern technology, clean equipment, and careful safety steps to protect your health.

Right After Surgery

After your procedure, you will be carefully monitored in our office recovery area with our highly qualified oral surgery assistants. If you received sedation, you may feel sleepy or unsteady. That is why someone must drive you home and stay with you for the day.

You will be given clear instructions to help you heal. These may include:

  • How to reduce swelling or discomfort
  • When and how to take medications
  • What foods are safe to eat
  • When to avoid physical activity
  • How to gently clean your mouth

Following these directions will help your mouth heal properly.

Healing and Recovery

Every patient and every procedure is different, so it can be hard to give an answer to the question, how long will recovery take?  We can, however, give some general guidelines at your appointment to let you know for your specific procedure.

For example, dental implants need time to connect to the jawbone. This process creates a strong base for replacement teeth. You can read more in the practice’s dental implant education resources.

During recovery, you may be told to:

  • Eat soft foods for a few days
  • Keep your mouth clean
  • Attend follow-up visits
  • Call the office if you notice unusual symptoms

Most patients heal well when they follow instructions and ask questions if something does not seem right.

Continued Care After Surgery

Your care does not stop when the procedure is over. Follow-up visits help make sure you are healing the right way.

The team at Jay Platt, DDS Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center works closely with patients and their dentists to support long-term oral health. You can learn more about the team on the Meet the Staff page.
